Frequently Asked Questions

What is the importance of having a will?

Having a Will ensures that the things you own such as your house, valuables and money are distributed according to your wishes, and not left to chance though intestacy rules (these are generic and apply if you don't have a Will) or potential disputes.

A Will can also appoint a guardian if you have children under the age of 18, another crucial decision you would not want to leave to chance.

Do I need a Will?

Yes:

- ensure your loved ones are provided for

- make sure you get to make the decisions, rather than someone else

- ensure your children are looked after the guardian you would choose

Did you know?

A marriage revokes a Will - so if you have married since making a Will, you need to make a new one.

Why should I consider Lasting Power of Attorney?

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to appoint someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so yourself, ensuring your preferences are followed.  If you do not have LPAs and are no longer able to make decisions for yourself, someone else will have to do so on your behalf but it may not be who you would have chosen.  Plus, it is signficiantly more expensive to have a person appointed by the courts to make your decisions and deal with your affairs, than if you have LPAs in place.
